Types of braces - Fixed retainers

Occasionally your orthodontist may feel it is necessary to use a fixed retainer in addition to a removable one.  These are generally fitted behind the front teeth to prevent relapse, with spaces opening or teeth rotating. It consists of a small thin wire glued into position.  They should generally stay in situ for at least five years and should be repaired if they break before this. Research has shown it takes 5 years for the fibres in the gingivae, which causes this type of relapse, to remodel around the teeth.

Fixed retainers are more difficult to clean and special care should be taken when cleaning to ensure that the gum does not become inflamed.  This can be achieved by using very small interdental brushes, Tepe™ brushes or super floss.
