Metal braces consist of brackets attached to the front surface of your teeth, with a wire running through each bracket. You can personalise them with coloured bands which tie the wire in place. Today, metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever before.
At Cygnet Orthodontics, we use metal braces for all our NHS patients. The treatment time varies from case to case, but typically lasts from 12-24 months.

You may experience some discomfort or soreness in the first few days after your braces have been fitted or tightened, but this can be managed with over the counter painkillers and will be short lived. If you find the wire or one of the brackets is irritating your gum you can place wax over it to make it more comfortable. We will provide you with free wax when we fit the braces. If you have any problems please give us a call and arrange an appointment.
Both metal braces and clear aligners are successful straightening methods. Metal braces are generally more affordable and very effective at treating complex cases, but don’t carry the same aesthetic benefits as clear brackets and aligners. Your Orthodontist will be able to discuss all the options with you and help you decide the best option.
No, the metal brackets attached to your teeth will not damage the enamel and are gently and effectively removed once your treatment is complete. It is important to look after your teeth and maintain an effective cleaning routine while you have braces to prevent tooth decay or decalcification.
