Self-ligating braces allow smoother and more comfortable tooth movement, and eliminate the need for frequent tightening appointments. They use the brackets to hold the archwire in place, allowing teeth to move more freely and removing the need for the elastics used with traditional braces.
We use DamonTM self-ligating braces at Cygnet Orthodontics. They work slightly differently to traditional braces with the bracket holding the archwire in place, allowing teeth to move more freely and removing the need for the elastics. The gentle forces used are designed to protect the health of your teeth and gums while in treatment.
They are available in metal or more aesthetic clear brackets for patients who are after more discreet straightening.
Comfortable to wear
Allows appointments to be shorter and further apart
Easy to keep clean
Resistant to staining
Self-ligating braces still need to be adjusted and checked, but the appointments are far less frequent than with other straightening methods.
Like with other types of braces, you may experience some pressure or discomfort in the first few days after your self-ligating brace has been fitted, or after an adjustment appointment. This can be managed with painkillers.
Self-ligating braces can be easier to keep clean than traditional braces, as they don’t have any elastic bands which can trap food particles. You will still need to ensure you clean your braces and teeth twice a day to prevent decay.
